Cox, a former chief executive at financial firms Morgan Stanley International and CS First Boston Corp., joined Barclays three years ago. In a news release, Barclays credited Cox with helping to deepen the firm's investment banking platform in the United States, Brazil and Mexico and for playing a key role in the company's acquisition of Lehman Brothers' North American assets. It also said that Cox has been a strong voice in Washington on regulatory matters.

Cox "was an instrumental part of the management team that guided the firm through the credit crisis so that we remained profitable throughout and are today in a stronger strategic position," Barclays Chief Executive Officer Bob Diamond said in a statement.

The company did not say who would replace Cox as chairman.
