Diebold Upgrades Deposit Accepter

Diebold Inc. has unveiled the latest version of its bulk deposit accepter, which lets automated teller machines accept check deposits and bill payments at the same time.

The North Canton, Ohio, manufacturer, said the new version can scan checks inserted in virtually any way, even upside down and crumpled.

It can accept up to 30 bill payments and check deposits and "differentiate between the two" types of transactions, Anna Istnick, a Diebold spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

The previous version of check accepters took only one check at a time and did not take bill payments.

A separate module that accepts up to 100 cash bills has been available for a number of years, Ms. Istnick said.

"It's there for financial institutions that have a lot of merchant customers," she said. "Instead of the merchants going into the branch and depositing their checks, they can just do it at the ATM."

The German automated teller machine manufacturer Wincor Nixdorf Inc. has been selling ATMs with bulk check and cash accepters for a number of years.

NCR Corp. of Dayton, Ohio, offers a bulk cash accepter. A spokeswoman for the company said it would be coming out soon with a bulk acceptor for both check deposits and bill payments.
