The Treasury Department is trying to boost use of direct deposit for government benefits by encouraging people affected by the recent flooding in the Midwest to have Social Security payments routed to their bank accounts.
More than 935,000 people receive their Social Security benefits by mail in five states affected by the flooding: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois — and mail has been disrupted in the region, the Treasury said Thursday.
About 80% of all Social Security recipients use direct deposit.
After hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused massive flooding in the South, about 85,000 emergency benefit payments were made to displaced people who did not receive their checks, the Treasury said.
