Discover Expands Cardholders' Access to Free ATMs

In an attempt to undercut U.S. banks by giving consumers free ATM access, Discover Financial Services will provide its card holders with access to surcharge-free ATMs via a partnership with Allpoint Network.

A subsidiary of ATM owner Cardtronics, Allpoint has a network of 43,000 ATMs in the U.S. that are located mostly in discount retailers, convenience stores, supermarkets and pharmacies. Its clients include 1,200 financial services providers covering about 60 million cardholders.

Discover's consumers can locate the surcharge-free ATMs using a native mobile app or browser on their smartphone.

"In the direct banking environment, accountholders may be willing to forgo brick-and-mortar offices, but convenient cash access is still a must-have service," said Ben Psillas, president of Allpoint Network, in a release.

Allpoint also recently expanded in Canada, in part through a partnership with 7-Eleven and Scotiabank.
