George A. Butler, a retired president of CoreStates Financial Corp., died Friday of natural causes. He was 69.

Mr. Butler started his career in the executive management training program at First Pennsylvania Corp., Philadelphia, in 1950.

After 13 years in commercial banking, he was named a regional vice president in 1963. He became an executive vice president in 1968. In 1973 he was named vice chairman, responsible for real estate and consumer activities, and in 1977 became president and chief operating officer. He was elected chairman and chief executive officer in 1979.

In March 1990, when the CoreStates/First Pennsylvania deal was completed, Mr. Butler became president of CoreStates. He retired at the end of 1991.

Mr. Butler was born in Westmont, N.J., and was raised in Philadelphia.

Mr. Butler, who lived in Blue Bell, Pa., is survived by his wife, Barbara, four children, and seven grandchildren.

A funeral service has been scheduled for Thursday.
