U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray in Minneapolis has hired Bill Crawford as a senior technology research analyst covering wireless Internet companies in its equity capital markets division.

Mr. Crawford was a vice president in the technology research team covering wireless devices at Merrill Lynch & Co. Before that he had been a vice president and executive producer at Netcast Communications Corp. in New York. He has 15 years of information technology and Internet industries experience.

He is based in New York.

Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York has promoted George A. Schieren to senior vice president and associate general counsel.He is responsible for managing the office of general counsel, which handles all of Merrill's legal issues. He continues to be a senior vice president and general counsel of the company's broker-dealer unit, Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc., a job he has held since 1996.

Mr. Schieren, who also became a member of Merrill's executive management committee, continues to report to Stephen L. Hammerman, vice chairman of the board of directors.

He joined the company's litigation department in 1981 and has held jobs of increasing rank as an assistant general counsel, first vice president, and executive assistant to the chairman and president. Before joining Merrill he had been a vice president and an associate general counsel at E.F. Hutton & Co. in New York. He started his career at the Securities and Exchange Commission in 1974.


PricewaterhouseCoopers has named John J. O'Connor, a managing partner in the Boston office, the leader of the firm's assurance and business advisory services practice in the Americas.Mr. O'Connor, 53, is responsible for 18,000 professionals who provide such services as traditional audits, global risk management, support for transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, designing products to help companies manage electronic business, and regulatory consulting.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has named Michael J. Costello to succeed Mr. O'Connor in Boston. Mr. Costello, 50, was the U.S. managing partner of specialty tax services in charge of the firm's tax practice in New England and upstate New York for five years.

The firm has also named Michael M. Morrow as head of assurance and business advisory services in the Northeast. He has been an assurance partner since 1986 and remains the head of the firm's operational and systems risk management practice in the Northeast, a job he has held for four years.


SOUTHEASTRegions Financial Corp. in Birmingham, Ala., has hired Carter Anthony as a senior vice president and the director of capital management in its trust division.

Mr. Anthony has held similar jobs, at the rank of vice president, at Birmingham-based companies and banks, most recently at Torchmark Corp.

Regions has also hired Tom Thompson as a vice president and promoted John Poole to that rank, both in the trust division.

Mr. Thompson, the president of the Estate Planning Council of Mississippi, was hired as an assistant executive officer. He is responsible for coordinating legal matters in cooperation with the general counsel's office; supervising compliance and trust marketing functions; coordinating training; and interacting with regulatory authorities.

Mr. Poole was named financial officer for the trust division. He is responsible for coordinating its financial and budget reporting in cooperation with the company's general accounting department.

He joined Regions in 1987 as a trust tax officer in Huntsville, Ala.. Since then he has held posts of increasing rank, including trust tax manager in Montgomery and Huntsville and personal trust officer in Huntsville.

Regions has $43.6 billion of assets.
