NEW ENGLAND

John Hancock Financial Services Inc. of Boston has hired John J. Danello as the chief counsel for its wealth management division.

He will report to John D. DesPrez, John Hancock's president and chief executive officer, and to Jonathan Chiel, its general counsel.

Mr. Danello, who has also been named a vice president, was a vice president and the group counsel for the asset management and insurance companies of Allmerica Financial Corp. of Worcester, Mass.

John Hancock is a unit of Manulife Financial Corp. of Toronto.


Bank of America Business Capital of Glastonbury, Conn., Bank of America Corp.'s asset-based lending unit, has made Joyce White its president.Ms. White, who was the president of its Pacific/Southwest division, will report to Richard Higginbotham, the president of B of A's asset-based lending and leasing division.


MIDWESTU.S. Bank of Minneapolis has named Steve Erwin its Nebraska president.

Mr. Erwin, who was its manager of community banking in the state, now also oversees commercial banking there and in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The U.S. Bancorp unit has also named Erica Opstad its manager of community development in California. She held that title for San Diego, Arizona, and, on an interim basis, Los Angeles.


Fifth Third Bancorp of Cincinnati has hired Cynthia Manzetti as its chief credit risk officer and a senior vice president.


She will oversee credit quality standards and processes and report to executive vice president Malcolm Griggs, Fifth Third's chief risk officer.Ms. Manzetti was a senior vice president and the head of credit for Wachovia Corp.'s Texas market. She has 25 years of banking experience.


MIDDLE ATLANTICHSBC Insurance Services of Bridgewater, N.J., has hired J. Kevin McCarthy as its managing director of insurance sales and business development for North America, a newly created job.

Mr. McCarthy came to the HSBC Holdings PLC unit from Allstate Life Insurance Co. of Northbrook, Ill., for which he had worked five years. He was its senior vice president of distribution and a member of its executive committee.

Earlier in his 30 years in the insurance industry he had held senior jobs with Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co. (Nationwide Financial Services Inc. bought it in 2002) and CNA Insurance Co.

Another HSBC Holdings unit, HSBC Securities USA Inc. of New York, has hired Anthony Ianno and Christopher Lowe as managing directors and the co-heads of the energy and utilities team for the Americas in its investment banking division.

They were managing directors in the natural resources investment group at JPMorgan Securities Inc.


SOUTHEASTSLM Corp., the Reston, Va., college lender better known as Sallie Mae, said Thomas J. Fitzpatrick will move up to chief executive officer in May, succeeding Albert L. Lord.

Mr. Lord will advance to the chairmanship, succeeding Edward A. Fox, who will retire.

Mr. Fitzpatrick will remain Sallie's president but will no long be its chief operating officer. He has held both jobs since joining Sallie in 1998 from Equity One Inc., a real estate investment trust in North Miami Beach, Fla., whose president and CEO he had been for 10 years.


Wachovia Corp. of Charlotte has hired Roderich M. Carr as the executive search consultant for its corporate and investment bank business.Mr. Carr, who has also been named a managing director, was a director and a sales manager in the agency and trust group of the global transaction services division at Citigroup Global Markets Inc.
