MIDDLE ATLANTIC

Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York has promoted Robert J. McCann to chief operating officer of its corporate and institutional client group.

He will work with Tom Davis, the group's president, and will be responsible for integrating investment banking, debt, and equity activities. He also will be chairman of the group's operating committee.

Mr. McCann was senior vice president in charge of the company's institutional client division. He had joined Merrill in 1982 and had been head of its U.S. and global equities units.


Champion Mortgage in Parsippany, N.J., a subsidiary of Cleveland-based KeyCorp, has promoted loan officer Chris Watson to staff manager at its sales center in Hanover, Md.He reports to Chris Infantino, manager of the Hanover sales center.

Mr. Watson had joined the company in April 1997 as a loan officer in the Baltimore office. He has three years of mortgage experience and 10 years of sales experience.


First Union Corp. has named Reginald E. Davis as president of its New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut region and Doris Grose as president of Educaid, its student loan division.Mr. Davis will succeed Robert Reid, who was recently named president of the Pennsylvania and Delaware region. Both will begin their new roles at yearend.

Mr. Davis has been in charge of First Union's Georgia bank for two years. He had started his banking career at the company in 1985 and had held jobs as senior vice president for Georgia commercial real estate and president of Georgia's west region.

He will report to Ben Jenkins, First Union's vice chairman and head of its bank.

Ms. Grose has been chief operating officer of Educaid since joining First Union in 1995. As president she will succeed John Reeves, who has been president since 1988 and will retire at the end of the month.


Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh has reassigned Matthew Giles, the president of its western Pennsylvania region, as chairman of its Community Development Corp.He is responsible for community development activities across the bank's regions and its retail-related business units.

Mr. Giles, who reports to Paul S. Beideman, executive vice president and head of Mellon retail financial services, was also named to Mellon's retail executive committee.

Mr. Giles, 53, had been head of the western Pennsylvania region since 1992. Before that he had led the commonwealth region, which covers south-central Pennsylvania, for nine years.

He had joined the bank in 1969 as a management trainee in the western Pennsylvania region and had held jobs including retail office manager and district sales manager.

Ralph J. Papa, a 31-year Mellon veteran, succeeded Mr. Giles as president of Mellon's western region.

Mr. Papa, 54, remains the chairman of the bank's central Pennsylvania region, a job he has held for 12 years. Before that he had been the head of the commonwealth region for two years and head of community banking. Earlier jobs included retail office manager and district sales manager.

He continues to report to Lisa M. Binder, senior vice president and head of Mellon regional consumer banking.


SOUTHWESTComerica Inc. has hired Raymond Lambert as the assistant vice president of its new Small Business Administration lending office in New Orleans.

He will report to Paul Reade, vice president of SBA lending in Houston and New Orleans.

Mr. Lambert was the assistant vice president of commercial lending at Liberty Bank and Trust Co. in New Orleans, her employer for two years. Earlier he had been an assistant vice president and branch manager at Hibernia National Bank, where he had worked for six years.
