NEW ENGLAND

Mellon Private Asset Management, a Boston business unit of Mellon Financial Corp., has named two compliance managers - Sandra A. Brown-McMullen and Mark J. Ryan - as vice presidents.

Their responsibilities have not changed. Both report to senior vice president Marilyn Kolb, the unit's director of risk management.

Ms. Brown-McMullen joined Mellon Private in 1981 as the trust operations supervisor. Since then she has also been its escrow supervisor, a senior banking officer, and a unit manager.

Mr. Ryan joined Mellon Private in 1987 as a manager in its operational accounting department. He has also been a corporate compliance officer for the audit and risk review department.

MIDWEST

Charter One Financial Inc. in Cleveland has hired David A. Bowen, the senior vice president of the client services group at KeyBank, at the same rank as the retail product manager of its own Charter One Bank.

Mr. Bowen's entire career had been with KeyBank and its predecessors.

He started in 1985 as a management associate at Ameritrust Co. in Cleveland, and later became its group product manager of retail investment and deposit product management.

Society Corp. of Cleveland bought Ameritrust in 1992 and merged with KeyCorp in 1994. Before being promoted to the client services post at KeyBank, Mr. Bowen was its vice president of retail delivery management.

WEST

Jefferies & Co., a Los Angeles institutional brokerage and investment banking firm, has hired Roy Furman as vice chairman.

Mr. Furman had held the same position at ING Barings since 1997, when ING Group acquired Furman Selz LLC, which he had co-founded and had served as president.

He had also been the chief executive officer for three years of Livent Inc., a Toronto theater company, until SFX Entertainment Inc. bought it in 1999.

He has 30 years of investment banking and securities experience.
