NEW ENGLAND

Seneca Financial Group Inc., a Greenwich, Conn., investment banking firm, has hired James Sullivan as a managing director.

Mr. Sullivan, 38, was a senior vice president at S.N. Phelps & Co., a Greenwich merchant banking and holding company specializing in restructuring distressed companies.

Before that he had been the chief operating officer and a senior vice president at Houlihan/Lawrence Inc., a Bronxville, N.Y., regional real estate company.

He has 10 years of investment banking experience


MIDWESTComputershare Ltd., a global securities industry technology provider based in Melbourne, Australia, has promoted Paul X. Tobin to chief operating officer of Computershare Investor Services LLC, its Chicago-based U.S. operating unit.

He reports to Steven Rothbloom, the unit's president.

Mr. Tobin, 39, had been Computershare's chief legal officer for North America since last year. Before that he had worked for the company in Melbourne as a business development manager.

Still earlier he had been the founder and president of Hubbub LLC, a South Yarra, Australia, business-to-business Internet commerce company. Before that he had been a senior vice president and the general counsel at CDB Infotek, an information technology company in Santa Ana, Calif.


ABN Amro North America Inc. in Chicago has promoted Gerrie M. Smith, the head of retail branch administration in the Midwest, to group senior vice president.Her responsibilities have not changed.

Ms. Smith joined the ABN Amro Holding NV subsidiary in 1996, when it acquired her previous employer, Comerica Bank-Illinois in Franklin Park, and renamed it LaSalle Bank Illinois. (The unit was later merged with several others into LaSalle Bank NA.)
