NEW ENGLAND

Brown & Co. Securities Corp., the Boston deep-discount online brokerage arm of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., has hired Karen Vernamonti to be its chief financial officer.

She reports to Elizabeth J. Fisher, the unit's chief executive officer.

Ms. Vernamonti was the chief financial officer and a managing director at CSFBdirect, which she joined last year, when Credit Suisse Group bought her previous employer, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette Inc. She had worked at DLJ for five years, most recently as a senior vice president in the treasurer's department.


SOUTHEASTSunTrust Banks Inc. in Atlanta has promoted Margaret Callihan to Chattanooga president at SunTrust Bank.

She reports to Robert J. Sudderth, the Chattanooga chief executive officer.

Ms. Callihan was an executive vice president, the Tennessee retail line business manager, and the head of the Tennessee business banking group for a year and a half. She is also on the bank's Nashville senior management committee.

She joined SunTrust in 1978 as a management trainee.


Banc of America Securities LLC in Charlotte, N.C., has hired Janice M. Smith as a principal and the head of conduit operations for its commercial mortgage-backed securities capital markets group.She is based in Charlotte and reports to Rochelle Dobbs, the head of the Bank of America Corp. subsidiary's group.

Ms. Smith was the head of commercial mortgage-backed securities capital markets servicing at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. in New York, a job she took when Chase Manhattan Corp. bought J.P. Morgan & Co. last year. Before that she had worked at Chase Manhattan Bank, which she joined in 1994.

Still earlier she had been the senior vice president in charge of operations at David Cronheim Mortgage Corp. in Chatham, N.J.


WESTWells Fargo & Co. in San Francisco has hired Sylvia Reynolds to be the marketing director and a senior vice president of its home equity division.

She reports to Doreen Woo Ho, the president of the division.

Ms. Reynolds was the executive vice president of deposit strategy and support in the residential lending group at Bank of America Corp. Before that she had been the group's executive vice president of strategic programs.

Still earlier she held senior marketing and strategy posts at Ceridian Corp., Citicorp Mortgage Inc., and Pulte Homes Inc.


MIDDLE ATLANTICDeutsche Bank AG has hired Joe McHugh as a director and a senior derivatives trader in its integrated credit trading group in New York.

He reports to Boaz Weinstein, the head of investment-grade and high-yield credit derivatives trading in the United States.

Mr. McHugh was the head of credit default swaps trading in the United States at Citigroup Inc. He had worked at Citigroup and its predecessor Citicorp for eight years.


Beacon Hill Asset Management LLC, a Summit, N.J., fixed-income investment management firm, has hired John M. Fogarty and James Connelly as managing directors.Each reports to Thomas Daniels, the firm's chief investment officer, and Jack Barry, its president.

Mr. Connelly is in charge of Beacon Hill's high-liquidity markets analysis and trading. He was the director of mortgage trading at Societe Generale Securities Corp.

Mr. Fogarty is in charge of marketing and client relationship management in the pensions, foundations, and endowments sector. He was a senior executive vice president at Mischler Financial Group Inc. in Corona del Mar, Calif. He has 14 years of mortgage-backed securities sales experience.
