Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. of Connecticut has promoted Robert Paiano to senior vice president of corporate asset protection for its property and casualty operations, a newly created job.
Mr. Paiano will oversee corporate risk and catastrophe management, insurance and reinsurance purchasing, security review, and growth strategies.
He has also been named the head of its Bermuda-based ceded reinsurance operations.
In both jobs he will report to David Robb, an executive vice president.
Mr. Paiano had been a senior vice president and the director of the investment strategy group for Hartford Investment Management Co.
MIDWESTFifth Third Bancorp of Cincinnati has hired Malcolm D. Griggs as its chief risk officer, the company's first, and as an executive vice president.
He will begin his new job Monday.
Mr. Griggs was the director of risk policy at Wachovia Corp. in Charlotte. He was given that job in 1995, when Wachovia was known as First Union Corp. (It bought the old Wachovia in 2001 and took its name.) He had joined First Union in 1989.
MIDDLE ATLANTICBarclays Capital Inc. has hired Steven Englander as the chief foreign exchange strategist for the Americas.
He will report to John Stathis, the head of sales and research for the Americas at the New York investment banking division of London's Barclays PLC.
Mr. Englander was a director and global currency economist in London for Citibank. Before that he had been a European equities economist for Citi. Earlier he had been an international economist for Salomon Brothers Inc., which Citigroup Inc. bought in 1997.
Barclays Capital has also hired Deron J. Goodwin as a director of foreign exchange corporate sales. Like Mr. Englander, he will be based in New York.
Mr. Goodwin was a vice president of foreign exchange corporate sales and structuring at Lehman Brothers. Before that he had been a manager of global foreign exchange and commodity risk management and international treasury operations at Eastman Kodak Co.
UBS Warburg LLC of Stamford, Conn., has hired Jeff Herlyn and Mike Rosenberg as the first co-heads of its global credit collateralized debt obligation group.
In addition, Mr. Herlyn has been named a managing director and Mr. Rosenberg an executive director. They will report to Sal Naro and Michael Connor, the co-heads of the UBS AG unit's global credit derivatives business.
Mr. Herlyn and Mr. Rosenberg had been the co-heads of CDO products in North America for J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and, before that, with one of its predecessors, J.P. Morgan & Co.
UBS Warburg has also hired Heather Bellini as the senior applications software analyst and an executive director. She will be based in New York.
Ms. Bellini had held the same job at Salomon Smith Barney. Earlier she worked at Lehman Brothers and, before that, at Oppenheimer Funds Inc.
SOUTHWESTNellie Mae Corp., a Braintree, Mass.-based education lender, has hired John W. Denton as an account executive for Texas and New Mexico.
Mr. Denton was a senior financial aid officer at the University of Texas' Health Science Center in Houston. Before that he had been a financial aid adviser for the Indianapolis-based ITT Educational Services Inc.
