Executive Changes: LNB Bancorp of Ohio Promotes Gary Smith To CEO and President

LNB Bancorp in Lorain, Ohio, has promoted Gary C. Smith to president and chief executive officer of both the holding company and its Lorain National Bank.

Mr. Smith succeeds James F. Kidd, 60, who has retired from both those posts and is now vice chairman of the bank and holding company.

Mr. Smith, 52, had been senior executive vice president of both entities since he joined the company in May. Earlier he was president of Bank First National in Newark, Ohio, and before that senior lending officer and chairman of the board of directors' loan committee at EST National Bank in Elyria, Ohio. He has 30 years of banking experience.

LNB Bancorp has $590 million of assets.


MIDWEST

Union Bank of Illinois in Swansea has promoted president Dennis Bielke to chairman and chief executive officer and Robert Christiansen to president and senior lending officer.Mr. Bielke succeeds Albert J. O'Brien, who retired from the bank last year. Mr. Bielke has been president since joining Union Bank in February 1997. Earlier he was president of the Boatmen's/NationsBank east region headquartered in Belleville, Ill. He has 31 years of banking experience.

Mr. Christiansen was vice president in charge of Union Bank's consumer finance division. Earlier he was in charge of the consumer finance division at Union Planters Bank in Belleville.

He had organized this group at St. Louis-based Magna Bank before it was purchased by Union Planters in October 1998.

Union Bank of Illinois, a subsidiary of Union Financial Group, has $138 million of assets.


MIDDLE ATLANTIC

Main Street Bancorp in Reading, Pa., has hired Brian B. Hummel and Robert J. Hoppes to be vice presidents.Mr. Hummel is to be in charge of the consumer loan and credit card departments for the company's Berks County Bank, Heritage Bank, and Main Street Bank. He was a branch manager at Great Valley Bank in Reading.

Earlier he was a vice president and mortgage loan administrator at Sovereign Bank in Wyomissing, Pa. He has 30 years of banking experience.

Mr. Hoppes is to be a commercial real estate lender for the Berks, Schuylkill, and Lehigh Valley regions. He was a vice president and relationship manager for community development lending at Philadelphia-based CoreStates Bank. He has 25 years of banking experience.

Main Street Bancorp has $1.3 billion of assets.


First Commonwealth Financial Corp., in Indiana, Pa., has promoted chief financial officer John J. Dolan and chief information officer Rosemary Krolick, both senior vice presidents, to executive vice president.Mr. Dolan joined the company in 1980 as a staff accountant. He has been chief financial officer since 1989.

Ms. Krolick joined the company in 1974. She has been chief information officer since 1996. She is also president of First Commonwealth's data processing subsidiary, Commonwealth Systems Corp., a post she has held since 1988.

First Commonwealth Financial Corp. has $4.3 billion of assets and two bank subsidiaries that operate in 18 counties of western and central Pennsylvania.


SOUTHEAST

Lamar Capital Corp. in Purvis, Miss., has hired Sam B. Kendricks for the newly created post of chief credit officer.Mr. Kendricks was a senior vice president at Deposit Guaranty National Bank in Hattiesburg, Miss. He has 20 years of banking experience.

He is to report to Kenneth M. Lott, Lamar's president and chief operating officer.

Lamar Capital, the holding company for Lamar Bank, Southern Financial Services Inc., and Mortgage Shop Inc., has $406.9 million of assets.
