Charter One Bank, the Cleveland-based lead subsidiary of Charter One Financial Inc., has hired Bank One's William Hamann to be senior vice president of commercial bank lending.

Mr. Hamann is to lead the thrift's expansion of commercial lending throughout its retail operating areas in Ohio, Michigan, New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont.

He was executive vice president in charge of credit products in northeast Ohio for the Cleveland retail bank subsidiary of Bank One Corp., Chicago. He joined what was then Banc One Corp. in 1988 as a manager of corporate banking after a stint at Society National Bank in Cleveland. He also has worked for Central National Bank of Cleveland, City National Bank in Detroit, and Manufacturers National Bank in Detroit.

After Charter One completes its acquisition of 14 Vermont National Bank branches and St. Paul Bancorp, a Chicago thrift company, it expects to have a commercial banking loan portfolio worth $750 million.

Charter One Financial has $24 billion of assets.
