An investor has filed a lawsuit to block the merger deal between the two First Citizens banks in the Carolinas, which are controlled by the Holding family. The case could turn on whether the directors on the special committees that reviewed the deal were truly independent of the Holdings.

First Citizens BancShares in Raleigh, N.C., has hired Brent Ciliano to be its chief investment officer.
Ciliano will lead the $31 billion-asset company's capital management group and chair its wealth management investment strategy committee.
Ciliano previously was the CIO at advisory firm Congress Capital Partners. He has also led portfolio strategy groups at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, SEI and MLIM (now BlackRock) and worked in global mergers and acquisitions at Merrill Lynch.
