Fiserv Plans P-to-P Service for Banks

Fiserv Inc. is planning to develop a person-to-person transfer service that its bank clients could offer through their Web sites to consumers.

The Brookfield, Wis., banking technology company said Wednesday that the upcoming service would be available to the over 3,100 financial companies that use its online payments network.

Fiserv expects to offer it initially to banks that use its CheckFree online bill-payment service, in the first half of next year, and later will offer it to clients that use other online services. It will allow people to send money to others, using the recipient's e-mail address or mobile phone number. The funds will be deposited directly into receivers' bank accounts, and they will be notified of the transaction by e-mail or text message.

Fiserv is one of numerous companies developing, testing or offering electronic P-to-P transfer services, either through Web sites, mobile phones or both.
