More than 1 million customers of Barclays Bank PLC are using smart card readers from Gemalto NV.

The Amsterdam vendor announced the milestone Wednesday. Barclays started offering the readers in July 2007 for online account access. Customers can choose to attach Gemalto's PINsentry reader to their computer to improve security when they access their bank accounts using their regular bank card and PIN. The reader can be detached and used with more than one computer.
"Adoption of the PINsentry reader by one million cardholders in one year is a clear demonstration that we made the right choice," Sean Gilchrist, Barclays' digital banking director, said in a Gemalto press release.
