Global Payments Extends Its Asia Reach

Global Payments Inc. is offering merchants in five new Asian countries the ability to accept China UnionPay cards.

The Atlanta processor said Wednesday that its Asian joint venture with HSBC Holdings PLC, Global Payments Asia-Pacific Ltd., has expanded China UnionPay acceptance into the Philippines, Brunei, the Maldives, Singapore and Sri Lanka.

China UnionPay is China's only electronic payment network; more than 2.1 billion of its cards have been distributed to consumers.

Global Payments also offers acceptance in Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and Taiwan.

"Our merchants in those markets can now welcome more mainland Chinese tourists," Ian Courtnage, the president of Global Payments Asia-Pacific, said in a press release.
