The security software vendor Guardian Analytics Inc. said it is using geolocation data from Quova Inc. to help financial companies spot fraudulent transactions.

Guardian, of Los Altos, Calif., said last week that it had incorporated the Quova information into its FraudMap product, which evaluates online banking behavior to determine when unauthorized people are trying to gain access to accounts.

Quova, of Mountain View, Calif., supplies data that can show where a computer is — for example, if someone is trying to gain access to an online banking Web site from a country known to have many con artists, or simply far away from a customer's known address.

"By analyzing account holder activity in conjunction with Quova's geolocation and network data, we can more effectively identify suspicious account activity," Tom Miltonberger, Guardian Analytics' chief executive, said in a press release.
