Heartland Revamps Payroll Pricing

Heartland Payment Systems Inc. announced a commitment Monday to charge payroll customers a flat price for three years and said it would eliminate "nuisance charges" for businesses that outsource their payroll work to the Princeton, N.J., processor.

Mark Strippy, Heartland's executive director of payroll services, said the company would offer employers a fixed-price contract with no incremental charges every time an employee is hired, fired, paid, or transferred.

"Providing owners with stable and transparent pricing enables them to accurately forecast and control their expenses," Mr. Strippy said in a press release.

Heartland said the pricing is based on a model it developed for its card-processing business, the largest part of its operation. Card processing provided 98% of Heartland's $1.1 billion of revenue last year, according to its annual report. Payroll is part of the "other segment" that makes up the rest.
