HSBC Holdings PLC said a computer server with customer data disappeared during a renovation at its Kwun Tong branch in Hong Kong.

The server had names, account numbers, and transaction details for 159,000 accounts; it did not have passwords, personal identification numbers, or user IDs, HSBC said in a notice posted Wednesday on its Web site.

The server was protected by "multiple layers of security," HSBC said, and it is working with law enforcement agencies to investigate the disappearance.

The London company also said it is contacting the affected customers and working to prevent further incidents of this nature.
