IBM, Cisco Set Branch Project

International Business Machines Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc. are planning to develop branch and call center systems to streamline bank efficiency and improve customers' experience.

The longtime allies said the effort involves the convergence of data, voice, and video capabilities. They announced the plan this month at the Bank Administration Institute's Retail Delivery conference in Las Vegas.

The goal is to integrate the technology of delivery channels to improve service, Sunny Banerjea, IBM's global solutions executive for the banking industry, said in an interview. "You don't have the best investment adviser, the best lending officer small business expert in every branch."

Paul D. Jameson, Cisco's global director of marketing and solution strategy for the retail financial services industry, said the companies are employing a modular approach to network design. "We want to be able to evolve this over time."
