ID Theft Brochure Has Phishing Focus

The federal bank, credit union, and thrift regulators released a brochure Monday warning customers of the dangers of identity theft.

"You Have the Power to Stop Identity Theft" focuses on phishing, where data thieves use e-mail to prompt consumers to visit a bogus Web site to try to get them to disclose personal financial information.

It also offers tips on preventing identity theft and lists the three major credit bureaus to contact in case of a possible identity theft.

The brochure is available online through the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the National Credit Union Administration, and the Office of Thrift Supervision.
