In Brief: 1st Hawaiian Going Wireless at Stadium

NEW YORK — U.S. Wireless Data Inc. and First Hawaiian Bank plan to start offering wireless credit card services at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.

The companies said card approvals will take three to five seconds — compared with 18 to 20 seconds for traditional dial-up phone authorizations.

Sonja Thomas, cash manager for Volume Services, the company that provides beverage and merchandise management services for Aloha Stadium and other sports arenas, said, “Due to the sheer volume of people purchasing merchandise, the speed of wireless authorizations is a great advantage.”

A dozen credit card terminals fitted with U.S. Wireless Data’s Synapse modem adapters will be used at souvenir kiosks and refreshment stands at Aloha Stadium. The adapters enable traditional dial-up terminals to be instantly converted to wireless devices, and no hardware or software modifications will be necessary.

“On the back end, we minimize our exposure to credit card fraud by monitoring the transactions via Synapse’s online real-time reporting feature,” Ms. Thomas said.
