American International Group Inc. announced Thursday that it had named Anastasia D. Kelly its general counsel and senior regulatory and compliance officer with the rank of executive vice president.
Ms. Kelly was an executive vice president and the general counsel of MCI/WorldCom, where she filled the role of chief legal officer from 2003 until MCI/WorldCom's merger with Verizon early this year. Before that, she was a senior vice president and the general counsel at Sears, Roebuck and Co., where she managed corporate legal policy and strategy.
Earlier, she was a senior vice president and the general counsel and corporate secretary at Fannie Mae and previously was a partner and associate in the Washington law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. During her tenure at Fannie Mae and in her time at Wilmer Cutler, Ms. Kelly had extensive exposure to regulatory and compliance issues involving financial institutions and securities firms, AIG noted.
The insurance giant ousted its longtime chief executive, Maurice R. Greenberg, last year and this February agreed to settle, for $1.64 billion, charges by state and federal regulators that it had manipulated its accounting to make operating results seem better than they were.
