In Brief: All 3 Wachovia Card Centers to Be Closed

CHESAPEAKE, Va - First USA, the credit card-issuing subsidiary of Chicago's Bank One Corp., said it will close all three of Wachovia Corp.'s credit card service centers after it completes its purchase of the bank company's cards portfolio, which is scheduled to happen within the next week.

First USA had initially planned to keep the Chesapeake service center open and shut the other two, in New Castle, Del., and Atlanta. The 230-employee Chesapeake center handles phone calls from Wachovia credit card customers.

The Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported Monday that all three centers would continue to operate though this fall. First USA said its eight existing service centers would then add Wachovia's 2.8 million credit card accounts and that it would keep Wachovia's toll-free customer service phone number.
