That is also more than any other U.S. bank's total number of retail checking customers, online or offline.

The Charlotte bank also said 5.6 million of its online banking customers pay their bills online, 75% more than a year ago. It started offering free online bill payment in 2002.

Sanjay Gupta, B of A's e-commerce executive, said in November that half of its transactions (excluding automated teller machine transactions) take place online.

B of A said a survey found online banking popular among its younger customers for convenience. Older customers bank online because they find it to be the most secure way to juggle multiple accounts. Sixty-four percent of the survey respondents said they enroll because they want 24-hour access to account information and online services.
