In Brief: Canada’s Manulife Closes 3 Purchases

TORONTO — Manulife Financial has completed three purchases: Commercial Union Life Assurance Co. of Canada; Zurich Canada’s Canadian group life and health employee benefits business; and 1.35 million active insurance policies from Daihyaku Mutual of Japan.

The acquisitions bring Manulife about 1.5 million new policies and more than $10.8 billion of funds under management. The closings were announced April 2; the prices were not disclosed.

Manulife Financial has operations worldwide. It provides insurance, annuities, retirement, and banking products.
