Fair, Isaac & Co. and Experian are developing a credit scoring product designed to help small-business lenders prospect for customers.

Other Fair Isaac products are designed to help lenders evaluate loan applications once they receive information from potential borrowers.

Fair Isaac's new product comes as many of the largest lenders to small business are trying to expand outside their geographic markets by mailing credit applications to potential customers.

"This is designed for a different purpose and takes advantage of all the information available," said Latimer Asch, Fair Isaac vice president for commercial products.

"It's a more powerful tool with a higher degree of predictability," he said, adding that it examines different data to predict a borrower's ability to repay.
