In Brief: DLJdirect Buys Cryptographic Accelerator

DLJdirect, the on-line brokerage subsidiary of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, has bought nCipher Inc.'s nFast 150 cryptographic accelerator, nCipher announced.

The technology lets customer transactions keep flowing at high speeds despite the computing demands of cryptographic security operations.

"Customers demand secure, fast service, and we are committed to ensuring the best possible on-line experience for our customers," said Suresh Kumar, chief information officer at DLJdirect, which has 90,000 visitors a day at its Web site. "By installing nFast 150 cryptographic accelerators on our secure servers, we have increased the number of transactions handled and, in turn, improved the customer experience."

The nFast accelerator works by "off-loading" the cryptography from the server computers, said Greg Dunne, vice president of U.S. sales for nCipher.

As a result, "DLJdirect customers don't have to wait to conduct their on-line trades. As more people turn to the Web to invest and purchase goods on-line, companies like DLJdirect are enhancing both the security and speed of their transactions with nFast accelerators."
