The Van Global Hedge Fund Index fell 0.2% last month, according to a preliminary report Monday by Van Hedge Fund Advisors International LLC in Nashville.

The percentage decline is the average return, net of fees, of hedge funds that have already submitted their January results to Van, a hedge fund consulting firm. The index is to be revised this month as more funds report.
All the major stock market benchmarks lagged hedge funds, according to Van Hedge Fund Advisors. The MSCI World Equity Index fell 2.3%, the S&P 500 2.4%, and the Nasdaq 5.2%.
