IN BRIEF: J.P. Morgan Hires Investment Banker

Charles Murphy, a former co-head of investment banking at Credit Suisse First Boston, joined J.P. Morgan & Co. as a managing director in the natural resource and utilities industry group.

Mr. Murphy, who began at Morgan last week, resigned from Credit Suisse First Boston in February 1996. He had been with the firm since 1976. He most recently worked at Sextant Group, a private equity firm in New York.

Beginning in the 1980s, Mr. Murphy ran First Boston's utilities and telecommunications group. From 1993 to 1995, he oversaw its investment banking division and ran equities underwriting from 1995 to 1996.
