North American applications for individually underwritten life insurance were off 5% in July from the year earlier, according to the MIB Life Index released Monday; it was the fifth consecutive month of declines.

For the year's first seven months, U.S. and Canadian application activity was down 3.1% compared with the year before.
U.S. application activity was off 5.3% during July and 3.3% for the year through July 31. Canadian application activity was off 2.3% in July and 1.8% for the first seven months.
