In Brief: MasterCard Veteran on EcomCard Board

WILMINGTON, Del. — John O. Smith, a former executive vice president of MasterCard International, has been named to the board of directors of EcomCard Inc., which is developing a prepaid gift card to be used at traditional and Web merchants.

Mr. Smith was the president and chief executive officer of Cirrus System Inc. and of Maestro International, MasterCard’s automated teller machine and debit systems. He spent nine years at MasterCard, leaving in 1995 to become a payment card consultant.

Isidore Papadopolous, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of EcomCard, said the product his company is developing will probably be a MasterCard and let people prepay up to $500 without paying a premium above the card’s face value.
