In Brief: Mellon Promotes Strategist to Top Economist

Mellon Bank Corp. on Monday named Richard B. Hoey chief economist.

Mr. Hoey, 56, succeeds Richard. D. Berner, 52, who joined Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in February, said a bank spokesman. Mr. Hoey will also be chief investment strategist for Mellon's $120 billion Dreyfus Corp. fund unit.

Dreyfus said Monday that it hired Pierre G. Trinque as director of equity research and senior portfolio manager. Mr. Trinque, 42, joins Dreyfus from Phoenix Investment Partners, of Hartford, Conn. He succeeds Mr. Hoey, who had held that role since 1997.
