In Brief: NationsBanc Montgomery Names New CFO

Managing director H. Thomas Moffett is to become chief financial officer at NationsBanc Montgomery Securities, the firm said Friday.

He will succeed Shaugn Stanley, who is to leave at the end of October.

Though the company would not say why Mr. Stanley is leaving, San Francisco investment bankers speculated that his departure is a result of conflicts between Montgomery and its corporate parent, the new BankAmerica Corp.

In the last two weeks at least eight top investment bankers have left Montgomery, including its founder, Thomas Weisel.

Mr. Weisel plans to form a San Francisco-based merchant bank, and about half of Montgomery's defectors left to join him.

Some Bay Area investment bankers expect more Montgomery bankers to leave after collecting their yearend bonuses.

Mr. Moffett is to be promoted to senior managing director. He will report to Lewis Coleman, Montgomery's new chief executive.
