In Brief: PNC Chairman: We Won't Be Forced to Merge

PNC Bank Corp. chairman Thomas O'Brien said the bank will not be influenced by pressures to merge, even as consolidation sweeps through the banking industry.

"It's overdone as to how big you have to be," Mr. O'Brien told the Bloomberg Forum.

Still, Mr. O'Brien said PNC is keeping its options open.

"We don't ever dismiss the idea of looking at other situations," including mergers of equals, he said.

He said the bank would consider a merger if the combined company would have a "better set of businesses."

PNC is the largest bank based in Pennsylvania, with total assets of about $77 billion.
