In Brief: Program to Educate Hispanics

PURCHASE, N.Y. — MasterCard International is helping the League of United Latin American Citizens, or LULAC, the largest Hispanic organization in the United States, to organize bilingual financial education workshops for Spanish-speaking communities.

This month directors of LULAC are to attend a training program sponsored by MasterCard. The program, called “El Arte de Construir un Futuro Financiero,” or “The Art of Building a Financial Future,” will cover topics such as making a budget, establishing a credit history, and using credit and debit cards.

MasterCard said the program is “designed strictly as a consumer education vehicle … and its materials carry no sales messages.”

Information from the workshops is also posted on MasterCard’s Spanish-language Web site, www.MasterCardenEspanol.com.

Last year MasterCard and LULAC tested the program in Chicago, Houston, and Anaheim, Calif.

LULAC has more than 700 local councils and 26,000 members.
