In Brief: Providian Names New Vice Chairman

SAN FRANCISCO — Providian Financial Corp., the credit card specialist, has promoted David J. Petrini from chief financial officer, to vice chairman.

The new job puts Mr. Petrini, who joined Providian in 1986, in charge of finance, technology, and administration.

Jim Rowe, who was president of global e-commerce, was named to succeed Mr. Petrini and reports to him. Mr. Rowe played a key role in Providian Financial’s 1997 spinoff from Providian Corp., which was taken over by the Dutch insurer Aegon NV.

Lauri Kober, who was the chief executive officer of Providian Financial’s GetSmart.com online loan marketplace, succeeded Mr. Rowe as president of global e-commerce. She reports to Shailesh Mehta, chairman and CEO of Providian Financial.
