International Bancshares Corp. of Laredo, Tex., on the Mexican border, will be adding Spanish-language transaction capability to its consumer and corporate online banking services.

Upgraded software from Corillian Corp. of Hillsboro, Ore., may be up and running by midyear, said Kevin Mullins, International's senior vice president of electronic banking, on Tuesday.

Corillian made multilingual transaction capabilities a standard part of the software in November. International will be the first to use the upgraded corporate software and one of the first to use the consumer upgrade.

International has been using Corillian software for online consumer banking since 2001. For corporate banking it has been using a dial-in system from Metavante Corp., a unit of the Milwaukee banking company Marshall & Ilsley Corp., since 1996.

Mr. Mullins said Corillian had "enhanced its corporate banking application significantly" in the last few years. The language capability of both packages was a big factor in International's decision, he said.

Half of International's customer base "is Spanish-speaking," he said, "and we really think that's going to set our system apart."
