In Brief: Spanish Wireless Pay Firm Picks Software

OMAHA, Neb. - Spain's largest financial group and a mobile phone company in Spain have selected ACI Worldwide software to run a payment system they are building that would let people initiate payments via mobile devices.

MovilPago, a joint venture of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA and Telefonica Moviles SA, plans to deploy the system in 30 countries within two years. It said it expects that 100 million consumers and five million merchants will use the system.

"The system is open to all GSM or other digital operators and to all financial institutions," said Mario Cantero Brandes, the chief executive officer of MovilPago.

The mobile payments software is based on ACI's Base 24 application software for routing and authorizing mobile payment transactions.

Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria has assets of $217 billion. Telefonica Moviles is the mobile communications subsidiary of the Telefonica Group, one of the world's five largest telecommunications companies.
