The boards of directors of Toronto-based Sun Life Financial Inc. and Sun Life Assurance Co. of Canada said Friday that they would name Ronald W. Osborne nonexecutive chairman when William W. Stinson retires in May.

Mr. Osborne's appointment is pending his reelection as a director by shareholders and voting policyholders at the annual meeting. He has been a director since 1989 and is chairman of the audit and conduct review committee and a member of the management resources committee.
Mr. Stinson has been a director since 1985. He was appointed Sun Life Financial's first nonexecutive chairman in 2003 after having been the lead director for four years.
