TIAA-CREF, a New York retirement services provider, said Wednesday that it had hired Susan Kempler to be the director and a portfolio manager for its institutional and retail growth and income funds.

Ms. Kempler is to manage more than $1 billion of assets from TIAA-CREF's San Francisco office.
She had worked at Citigroup Asset Management, where she started and co-managed the Smith Barney Mid-Cap Core Fund. Previously, she was a portfolio manager at U.S. Trust, where she specialized in high-net-worth asset management.
