In Brief: Wells Says 107 of Promised 4,600 Jobs Cut

the 4,600 jobs it aims to cut as a result of its November merger with Norwest Corp.

To date, 1,083 staff members at the $205.4 billion-asset banking company have received severance packages or have been told their jobs will be eliminated, Wells Fargo spokesman Larry Haeg said Tuesday. However, Wells Fargo has been able to find new jobs within the company for 976 workers whose positions were cut, he added.

Of the 976, 730 found other positions through informal networking; the remaining 246 were placed through Wells Fargo's retain initiative, through which employees are given job coaching and career transition counseling, Mr. Haeg said.

After the merger of Wells Fargo and Minneapolis-based Norwest, the company said it would cut 5% of its 92,000 jobs. The bank expects to complete the reduction in positions by the end of 2000.
