Intuit Offers QuickBooks for Handhelds

Intuit Inc. has launched a version of its QuickBooks small-business accounting software that works on handheld devices.

The Mountain View, Calif., company said Monday that customers now can access its QuickBooks Online Web-based accounting software though Apple Inc.'s iPhone or Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry devices.

The applications allow users to check balances, track money movement, look up customer contact information, and view profit and loss reports. Intuit's has had an iPhone version of its Quicken Online consumer product since the software was launched in January, and last week the vendor launched another consumer product, Quicken Beam, which provides things like balance updates over text messages to consumer cell phones.

Brad Smith, Intuit's president and chief executive, said in an earnings conference call last week that it is increasingly focused on services that use a connection to the Web.
