Intuit Inc.'s Mint.com is adding bill payment reminders to its free personal financial management service.
The reminders, announced Monday, will let the Mountain View, Calif., company's 6 million users see bill notifications for all of their financial accounts in one place and set email and text reminders to avoid missed payments. The tool lets users add any bill, assign an amount, name and due date.
The service does not present copies of bills and it does not allow users to pay bills from Mint's site. Mint.com also offers alerts for credit card and other loan payments.
Mint.com's bill alert service is useful to consumers, who often fear that by switching to an online banking or financial management service that they will miss payments, experts say.
"Mint.com has to compete with what banks are offering and keep ahead of them," says Stessa Cohen, research director of banking industry advisory services at Gartner Inc. in Stamford, Conn.
