The Japanese card network JCB Co. Ltd. is using a service from the Singapore security vendor Cassis International Pte Ltd. to develop a way to program payment card information into mobile phones remotely.
The Cassis service allows the information to be transmitted to mobile devices. The devices, which need to be equipped with near-field communication chips, could then be used for contactless payments.
"Secure over-the-air service is a key factor in mobile payment," Tom Okabe, JCB's senior vice president of global infrastructure technologies, said in a press release Thursday. Contactless payment adoption is "going to happen in many markets soon, and we need to be ready for commercial deployment when it does."
