Lawsuits Against Collectors Pile Up

From Aug. 1 to Aug. 15, 278 collection companies were named as defendants in lawsuits citing violations of either the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act or Fair Credit Reporting Act, according to WebRecon LLC, a Grand Rapids firm that tracks such suits.

During the period, 403 unique plaintiffs filed 354 FDCPA lawsuits and another 49 FCRA lawsuits.

There were multiple plaintiffs involved in one case.

Eighty-one plaintiffs previously filed either FDCPA, FCRA or TCPA (Telephone Consumer Protection Act) lawsuits. Combined, those plaintiffs have filed roughly 200 lawsuits since 2001.

Illinois' Northern District Court led the way with 27 lawsuits.

Year to date, 5,652 FDCPA, FCRA or TCPA lawsuits have been filed in the United States.

Of those, 4,755 cited collection practices law violations, 796 involved the credit reporting law and five cited the phone call protection law, according to WebRecon.
