Stephen Ensign, 65, is set to retire April 30 as an employee of the Newport company but will remain its chairman. He will also provide consulting services and serve as chairman of its Lake Sunapee Bank unit, according to a press release Friday.

Ensign has spent more than 40 years with New Hampshire Thrift and was CEO from 1992 to 2012, when he became executive chairman and turned the CEO job over to Stephen Theroux.

Ensign "has been an iconic figure in the history of our company and of the bank," Theroux said in the news release.

New Hampshire thrift has $1.3 billion of assets.
