NEW YORK -- MasterCard International Inc. said that its U.S. region posted gross dollar volume for all products of $33.31 billion in the second quarter, a 23. 1% increase over the year-ago period.
The company said the number of cards rose 13.2% on the quarter, to 106.23 million, while the number of accounts rose 13.8%, to 77.52 million.
MasterCard said net settlement dollar volume for August totaled $10 billion, an increase of 23.7% over August 1992.
The top five banks and thrifts have combined total assets of nearly $13 trillion.
The two regional banks are anticipating that borrower demand will increase in the back half of the year. High interest rates and economic uncertainty have been muting the appetite for borrowing.
